French
Pupils
begin learning French in Year 4 and the emphasis at this stage is
primarily on the spoken language. A range of resources and activities
are used to engage pupils’ interest and to help them to gain confidence
in using the language.

In Year 5, teaching is based on the Key Stage 2 Modern Languages curriculum. Topics are taught through the four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Emphasis continues to be placed on building up pupils’ vocabulary, within familiar and new topics.

In Year 6, pupils cover units 1-7 of the course book, which provides a thorough grounding in French through the combination of a lively, communicative approach to learning, with a clear structural and grammatical progression.

At the beginning of Year 7, pupils are placed into two sets, based on ability in this subject,. Setting is reviewed at the beginning of each academic year. Pupils, in both sets, cover units 8-10 of book 1 and units 1-3 of book 2. Each pupil will have the opportunity to develop in the four skill areas through purposeful and stimulating activities and will be encouraged to develop study skills by learning to work both individually and together in groups.

In Year 8, pupils cover units 3-8 of the course book and continue to develop confidence in understanding and using the language. They are encouraged to express themselves using a range of vocabulary and structures.

The four language skills are developed in Year 9 to incorporate more extensive reading, productive and creative writing, personal conversation and practical situations in role-plays and unscripted recordings. Grammar continues to be central to pupils’ learning.

The GCSE course (Years 10 & 11) follows the AQA syllabus. There are two tiers of assessment: Foundation (G-C) and Higher (D-A*). Candidates may be entered for either Foundation or Higher in each skill. There is no coursework and the four skills are weighted equally. GCSE content is based on six topic areas:
- personal relationships
- tourism
- the environment
- leisure
- home life
- education/work

Out of the Classroom
- Trips to France are organised on an annual basis. Pupils in Years 7 – 9 have the opportunity to visit Paris and pupils in Years 9 – 10 have the opportunity to participate in a Homestay visit to Brittany
- Theatre visits are arranged regularly
- GCSE pupils have individual speaking practice on a regular
basis
