Learning Support
A considerable number of students, whatever their level of ability, may at some time experience difficulties with their learning.
Red House works hard to advise staff about strategies for all
students requiring additional support. A well qualified, experienced
SENCO works throughout the school.
We ensure that all staff are kept informed about students with Special
Learning Needs and take pride in the close links we build with
parents.
- Our SENCO teaches children on a 1to1 basis if appropriate, or in small groups for curriculum support.
- Extra English and Maths are timetabled for those pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 who benefit from this provision, rather than beginning a second foreign language. These lessons reinforce literacy and numeracy skills during Key Stage 3.
- The school offers pupils with SEN continuity, with the SENCO working in all areas of the school from Nursery and Infants up to GCSE level.
- The school has excellent links with Dyslexia Action and a specialist teacher is available to provide individual literacy programmes for pupils with Specific Learning Difficulties.
- Red House was recently highly commended in the recent Inspection
Report which recognised SEN as a real strength within the school
:
“Provision for pupils with special educational needs is particularly
good, enabling them to make rapid progress throughout the
school.”
“ Support for pupils with SEN is very good throughout both sections of
the school… the SENCO is pivotal in identifying and assessing pupils,
in setting targets and in planning strategies in conjunction with class
and subject teachers.”
“Communication between the SENCO and other teachers is very
close.”
- All our pupils are valued and encouraged to participate in all areas of school life so that they reach their potential academically, and also develop important skills and self- esteem through a varied extra-curricular programme. The SENCO is well placed as the drama director of school productions, to involve pupils in drama, music or as part of the backstage crew.
- We are mindful of Disability and Discrimination legislation and
work hard to ensure pupils are able to access the curriculum, and have
the relevant concessions to help them achieve their potential in
examinations.
