Year 4

presentation3.jpgChildren move across from the Nursery and Infant School at the end of Year 3, and receive a warm welcome into their first class in the Main School. The children are taught mathematics, English, science, history, geography, RS, art and ICT by their form teachers in two parallel classes, with their own toilet and cloakroom facilities. They also enjoy music and games (with specialist teachers) and visiting the local swimming baths once a week.

Pupils are taught numeracy and literacy following National Curriculum guidelines, with regular hand writing practise and spellings/times tables to learn for homework.

In science, the children have use of the junior laboratory. Topics include moving and growing, keeping warm, friction, circuits and conductors, habitats and solids & liquids.

In history, they study the Tudors and the Aztecs, and in geography pupils develop their map skills, learn about the weather, study environmental issues and look at a specific locality. The children use the Main School art room for their art and craft lessons and also use the main ICT suite for ICT lessons.

Out of the Classroom

Year 4 teachers organise several educational trips during the course of the year. Last year, Form 4 enjoyed a day out at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds as part of their studies on the Tudors; a morning at Billingham Beck Ecology Park as part of their work on habitats and a visit to Tennis World in Middlesbrough to hone their tennis skills, with the emphasis being on fun and games. They also attended National Schools Film Week as part of their literacy course, made Aztec masks at SPARK in Stockton and watched a performance of Team Players.

The pupils in Year 4 enjoy a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. They are able to join the junior choir, the orchestra, gardening club, bird club, chess club and enjoy cross country running and orienteering. In addition they are able to attend hockey, netball, rugby and football practices.

Year 4 is an exciting year which the children thoroughly enjoy and where great progress is made in all academic subjects towards their targets at the end of Key Stage 2. With so much going on, the pupils still find time to organise an Easter egg competition and Book Fair each year
