Dear Parents,

This week has been another exceptionally busy one, with the children in Year 7-9 having their summer assessment week and the Year 11 pupils starting the second week of their GCSEs. Across in the Junior School, the Year 3 children hosted an amazing French afternoon at the Maison Rouge Café, and the Year 4 pupils had a fantastic day tasting Mexican food, as part of their Aztec topic. Thank you to Red House parent, Mr Munro, for donating an amazing supply of food, drink and Mexican-inspired merchandise!

The Spires
In Wednesday’s ‘The Spires’ (Junior Oxbridge) club, I invited a former pupil from my previous school, Lizzie, to talk to the group about life at Cambridge University. Lizzie studied Human, Social and Political Sciences (HSPS) at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and is now working for PWC. A couple of weeks ago, the pupils also had a Q&A session with another former pupil, Jenny, who is currently in her final year reading Classics at Exeter College, Oxford. The pupils were hugely inspired by both Jenny and Lizzie’s talks and are very excited for their visit to Oxford and Cambridge in early July.

Parent-Teacher Consultation Evenings and Parent Guides
For the past two years, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Parent-Teacher consultation meetings in the Spring Term in the Senior School have taken place over Teams. From speaking to Heads in other schools, both independent and state, a ‘covid-keep’ which many schools are retaining are online parent-teacher meetings.

I would love to gauge the Red House parent appetite for a continuation of the current system and to this end there is a brief survey to complete. If you have more than one child in next year’s Year 7-11, please can you complete a separate survey for each child. The deadline for contributing to the survey in 9am on Monday 6 June 2022. Please contact the school office if you need the link to the survey resending to you.

From September, we will be running Parent Guide sessions for Years 7-11 (the Junior School up to Year 6 hold a similar session in the Summer Term already), which will be an opportunity for parents to come into school and meet key staff and find out what the year ahead holds for their child.

Pride Week
As I mentioned in Pupil Post last week, we are celebrating our very first Red House Pride event in school in the week commencing Monday 13 June, which will culminate in a whole-school rainbow run on the Senior School field on the afternoon of Friday 17 June. Parents are warmly invited to attend. Please see more details in Mr Barnbrook-McKay’s letter at the end of Pupil Post.

Parent Portal
Please can I gently remind parents, if you have not already done so, to take a moment to log into the Parent Portal, using your username and password. As I mentioned in last week’s Pupil Post, we will be publishing reports on the portal in the last week of the Summer Term. If you experience any difficulties, please contact Mr Butterfield via the following link: Mr Butterfield’s email address

PTA Platinum Jubilee Picnic
Pre-booked tickets for the Jubilee Picnic event this afternoon were sent home with pupils yesterday. There are a small number of tickets that will be available at the gate, £3 per person – but no further pre-ordered food boxes are available. These tickets are subject to availability, due to limited capacity, first come, first served.

I am really looking forward to welcoming many of you to the event later today. It promises to be an amazing afternoon and I am sure there will be lots of fun to be had. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the PTA and school staff members for all of the hard work which has gone into organising this event.

I hope you all have a very relaxing half term holiday with your families and I am looking forward to welcoming the children back into school on Monday 6 June.

With very warm wishes

Dr Rebecca Ashcroft

Miss Claire Thompson
Deputy Head & Head of Senior School

It has been a hugely busy end to a busy half-term and the children should feel proud of the way they have conducted themselves during exam week; they have certainly earned a well-deserved rest over the half-term break!

Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed joining in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations at the Junior School today, taking part in a carousel of activities, including outside games, icing biscuits, Queen decorating and constructing palaces. I know many of the children and families from the Senior School will be attending the Jubilee picnic tonight and I can’t wait to see you there!

Year 7 ISA Platinum Jubilee Arts Challenge
I am delighted to share with you that our Year 7 pupils received a ‘Judges Selection’ certificate this week, which means their design was selected to be featured in the ISA gallery. This is now live on their website so please check it out:

Year 6 Eden Camp Trip: Wednesday 15 June 2022
Linked to their English studies and their class novel, Carrie’s War, our Year 6 pupils will visit Eden Camp on Wednesday 15 June 2022. The pupils will explore various exhibits such as ‘the Blitz’, ‘the home front’ and ‘the U-boat menace’ to enhance their understanding of the Second World War. A letter is attached with further details.

Year 6 Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
After the May half-term break, in their PSHE lessons, Year 6 pupils will be learning about relationships, reproduction, conception and pregnancy, as part of our School RSE programme. This will build upon the lessons delivered in Year 5 and will cover the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up. More information is attached in a letter below.

Year 6 into Year 7 Transition Day: Wednesday 22 June 2022
On Wednesday 22 June 2022, our current Year 6 pupils will spend the day as Year 7 in school. This is an exciting opportunity to meet their new form teacher and some of their new subject teachers. The pupils will spend the afternoon with the PE department so will need to wear their PE kit on the day. Further information will follow.

Bag2School Collection: Friday 10 June 2022
The PTA has organised a Bag2School Collection for Friday 10 June 2022. May half-term provides an ideal opportunity for a ‘Spring Clean’ so please check your wardrobes for any unwanted textiles. Please see the letter attached for further details.

Mr Simon Haywood
Head of Junior School

What a fantastic week we have had at the Junior School this week; all Year groups have been busy preparing for today’s special events. It was lovely to see all the children kitted out in their red, white and blue outfits today for our own celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Our afternoon assembly felt extremely patriotic, as we sung ‘Rule Britannia’ with gusto! You may even get a rendition at the Jubilee picnic this evening!  Year 4 enjoyed a wonderful visit to York for their visit to The Chocolate story, which linked to their topic on Mexico, where chocolate has its origins. Year 3 parents were delighted to be guests at the French café on Wednesday and the pupils looked magnificent as they waited on them. There was even time for a French game of Lotto and an unforgettable French version of ‘Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes!’

Commencing Monday 6 June, children in Years 1 to 5 will participate in INCAS assessments, which help to identify and diagnose specific learning strengths in individual pupils and inform future planning. These are assessments designed by the CEM Centre at Durham University, where pupils work at a computer and are guided by audio instructions. The pupils don’t recognise it as an assessment, rather more like a fun online activity. The assessment is kept low key and should be enjoyed. It can’t be revised for and certainly shouldn’t cause any concern. Should you like any more information, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Transition Day & Parent Information Meetings
Next half-term, on Wednesday 22 June 2022, we will be providing the children with a Transition Day: the opportunity to ‘move up’ for the day and meet their new class teacher. This will also provide our current Year 5 children with an experience of Senior School life as they will move ‘across the pond’ to become Year 6s. Following Transition Day, we will be hosting Parent Information Meetings so parents can meet their child’s new class teacher and find out more about this exciting next step on their Red House journey. Please refer to our Junior and Senior School dates lists and more information will follow.

Year 5 Carlton Camp Residential Letter: Friday 7 October – Sunday 9 October 2022
As part of our co-curricular residential programme, our current Year 5 pupils are being offered the opportunity to attend this fantastic trip, from Friday 7 October to Sunday 9 October 2022 (when they will be in Year 6). This experience serves to develop resilience, build self-confidence and improve well-being, whilst fostering communication, teamwork and social skills. In order for your child to secure their place, please make sure that payment is made by Friday 24 June 2022. A letter is attached with further details.

We completely understand that parking can be difficult at the beginning and end of the day, due to the limited space. Please continue to park with thought and consideration for others when collecting your children. Also, unless you are waiting for siblings, please would you leave the school premises as soon as your child has been collected, to allow for other parents to enter the school grounds. Please may I also remind you that the school car park is for staff only. Please do not use this car park when dropping off or picking up pupils, unless you require the disabled parking space. Please may I also ask parents to avoid parking in the church car park at drop off and pick up times.

I wish you all a relaxing and enjoyable half term break.
