Year 5 children dressing up for World Book Day

Dear Parents,

This week has been a super busy week across Red House School, as we have adapted to the new routines in school, following the relaxation of COVID-19 measures. Year 2 children visited Captain Cook’s museum on Wednesday; whilst the Year 10 were treated to a poetry extravaganza at the ‘Poetry Live’ event in Bradford. On Monday, I spoke to the Year 9-11 pupils about unconscious bias and across both schools, we celebrated World Book Day on Thursday, in true Red House style, with the pupils dressing up as their favourite book characters.

Advice Regarding Recent Ukraine News
The events in Ukraine are both worrying and concerning for all of us, and we are sure it will have been brought up by your children, who will have been asking questions or seeking reassurance from you as the crisis develops. It is possible that they will have seen a variety of graphic or distressing images or footage of the conflict via the news and possibly via social media too, and this might affect them. I spoke to the whole school this morning about strategies to use if they feel overwhelmed by the recent events.

There are also some excellent advice and resources for you to use at home to support any discussions, which I have added below. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact school.

Red House School Ukraine Appeal: Monday 7 – Friday 11 March 2022
In my whole school assembly this morning, Mrs Fryer launched a school-wide appeal to support the Ukrainian refugees, who are displaced and homeless, following the invasion of their country nine days ago. We will be collecting donations from Monday 7-Friday 11 March. The items will then be transported to Stockton Borough Council’s offices on Friday, where they will be transported to the areas where they are most needed. There is a letter from Mrs Fryer at the bottom of this week’s Pupil Post which gives further details.

The British Red Cross Bake Sale: Friday 11 March
We will also be holding a Bake Sale to raise money for the British Red Cross, which is part of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC). The DEC launches appeals during times of monumental suffering, which is the case in Ukraine right now. The bake sale will be at break and lunchtime on both sites on Friday 11 March. Please ask your child to channel their inner Mary Berry and bake some cakes for this fantastic cause.

Year 11 GCSE Appeals Procedure
Please see at the bottom of Pupil Post, a letter from Mrs Sweeney, our Exams Officer, with regards to the process of making an appeal for a GCSE Non Examined Assessment (NEA) subject.

  • Save the Date – PTA Jubilee Party: Friday 27 May
On Friday 27 May, just before we start the May half term holiday, we will be holding a Jubilee party to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. More details to follow…

Year 11 Mock Examinations and End of Mocks Treat
I have been so proud of the Year 11s and how hard they have worked for their second round of mocks over the past few weeks. The pupils enjoyed hot chocolate and delicious home-made cookies at break today in the dining hall. We wish them all the best for their preparations for the examinations in the summer.

COVID-19 Reminder
A gentle reminder that if your child tests positive for COVID-19, or is exhibiting the key symptoms of COVID-19, they should not attend school for 5 days, given the potential risk and the need to protect pupils and staff from possible infection with COVID-19. It is advised that they have two negative LFD test results before returning to school.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend with your families.

With very best wishes

Dr Rebecca Ashcroft
Head

Miss Claire Thompson
Deputy Head & Head of Senior School

It has been a wonderfully busy week back at school. The return of co-curricular clubs got off to a great start and there was an abundance of sporting and academic celebrations, as well as merit achievements, in assembly this morning.

My highlight this week has got to be visiting St George’s Hall in Bradford for the ‘GCSE Poetry Live’ event with Year 10 on Wednesday. The children were an absolute pleasure to take on the trip: great ambassadors for the school and they certainly got a lot out of the day.

This week, we have also had some visitors in school. It was wonderful to hear their comments about the children, looking smart and wearing their uniforms with pride, their high levels of courtesy with staff and each other, and their confident communication skills to name a few. Even though I’ve heard it many times, it is never taken for granted and always a joy to share.

Year 11 Parents’ Evening & Study Leave Date
Year 11 Parents’ Evening will take place on Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 March 2022. This will provide an opportunity for teachers to discuss recent progress and mock examination results. A sign-up letter will be shared next week. The pupils have also been informed of their Study Leave date, which is Friday 13 May 2022. Their last day of teaching will be on Thursday 12 May 2022 and we’ll make sure they receive a great ‘send-off’ on the Friday. More details of this will follow soon.

Year 9 Parents’ Evening Dates 2022
Our Year 9 teaching staff are looking forward to meeting with parents of pupils in Year 9, via Teams, next Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 March 2022. Please make sure you have signed up by the end of today if you would like an appointment. The letter can be found here.

World Book Day Readathon Years 6-9
A reminder that we are running a ‘Readathon’ with pupils in Years 6-9 to celebrate World Book Day, which took place nationally on Thursday 3 March 2022. This is a fun challenge to encourage reading for pleasure and a great opportunity to raise sponsorship money to support children’s hospitals. The children were given everything they need for this on Thursday in school but have been encouraged to speak to Mrs Fryer if they require anything else.

Mr Simon Haywood
Head of Junior School

The Pupils at the Junior school have certainly got into the swing of things very quickly after the February half term. This has included Pancake races, a school trip and of course, World Book Day.

EYFS pupils have also been looking at dragons (apparently, they are not all mean!).  Year 1 have been learning how to weave as part of their new art topic and are creating an under the sea place mat.  The Year 2 children finally went on their trip to Captain Cook’s Museum postponed from last term. It was a fantastic day where the children were able to consolidate their learning of Captain Cook by touring the museum, handling artefacts, dressing-up and creating some beautiful aboriginal artwork too! Year 3 have enjoyed their first forest school session with Mrs Reily.  They have also been learning about the French artist Seurat and pointillism. Year 4 have been locating the rainforests on a world map and gathering information.  In ICT they have been creating their very own presentation all about Sloths!  In Year 5, the pupils have been introducing the new topic of Forces.  Having visited the McLaren Test Centre online, they have looked at driving force, friction, air resistance and weight. They have also started to learn about 3D Modelling in their computing lessons and are having lots of fun learning the poem Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll, and writing their own nonsensical versions.  With trips and co-curricular clubs starting to take place, it finally feels that life at the Junior school is returning to some kind of normality.
