Dr Rebecca Ashcroft, Head at Red House School

Dear Parents,

Today’s Merit and Celebration assembly was a wonderful festival of the achievement that our pupils are involved in, both in and outside of school. The celebrations ranged from Latin and ballroom dancing to cycling, from the Netball National Finals to swimming and from rugby and football to golf success! I am incredibly proud of our entire pupil body.I also gave the pupils an update on how amazingly well Iris in Year 6 is doing in her mammoth 1000-mile charity cycle ride from Leeds to Barcelona. Iris is raising money for Maggie’s, a charity providing free cancer support and information in centres across the UK and online. Iris is cycling with Helen Butters, a member of the ‘Yorkshire Rows’ who spoke in an assembly on 1 April. Deputy Head & Head of Senior School

There has been a very purposeful atmosphere in school this week, with the start of the Year 10 exams and the Year 11 French speaking GCSE, and it is a credit to the children that they have remained positive and in good spirits around School. It was also an honour this week to announce our new Senior Prefect Team and I can’t wait to work more closely with the selected pupils in this role; they have already shared some interesting initiatives they would like to implement!I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our current Senior Prefects for their tremendous efforts: leading assemblies, break time duties, decorating the Christmas tree and supporting the school during events such as Open Morning and the Welcome BBQ.Our Year 11 Charity Committee has also made a huge contribution to school life, supporting Mrs Lindsay-Symington with various charitable events throughout the year. They’ve been fantastic ambassadors for the school and great role models for our younger pupils.Year 11 Last Day & PromThe Year 11 children have been given their Prom invite from the PTA this week. Please can they return their reply slip with their meal choices to the Senior School office on Monday 9 May 2022. It will be a fantastic event to celebrate their hard work and time at Red House! As you will be aware, their last day in school is Friday 13 May next week when study leave begins; I have attached a letter with further details. We would also like to give the Year 11 children a farewell treat by taking them to the Metro Centre after school on Thursday 12 May 2022. Head of Junior School

Although the weather wasn’t fantastic, I hope you all managed to make the most of the Bank Holiday weekend. In my assembly this week, I told the pupils the fable by Aesop of ‘The Ant and The Grasshopper’. I was delighted that the children were able to identify the meanings behind the fable, such as the virtues of planning ahead, and that preparing properly usually leads to better outcomes. I know our pupils are fantastic at learning their spellings and times tables at the weekend, but should they ever need a gentle reminder, please feel free to refer to the story!Holiday ClubPlease find attached to this post the Holiday Club forms for May half-term. As the week contains two bank holidays, Holiday Club and Sports Camp will only run from Monday 30 May to Wednesday 1 June. Should you wish to book a place, please complete the form and return to me as soon as possible. The Travelling Book FairWe are delighted to welcome the Travelling Book Fair into the Junior School from Monday 16 June. This is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to purchase some new and wonderful books, whilst securing new literature for the school library at the same time.  Year 4 & 5 will be able to access the book fair at the Senior School at specially designated times. We know from past events how excited the pupils get when the Travelling Book Fair arrives and we really do appreciate your support with these events. Please refer to last week’s letters for the opening times.Karate ClubIt gives me great pleasure to welcome Holly Sterling back to Red House to begin Karate club, starting on Wednesday 11 May 2022. This was always a tremendously popular club that our pupils enjoyed immensely. Should you wish your child to join, please refer to the letter attached.Pupil help at Twilight Tours: Thursday 19 May (4-6pm)We will be hosting Twilight Tours for prospective parents on Thursday 19 May from 4pm to 6pm. I would like to invite pupils in Year 3 and Year 4 to be tour guides and school ambassadors on the day. Should your child wish to be involved, please do let me know as soon as possible.ParkingWe completely understand that parking can be difficult at the beginning and end of the day, due to the limited space. Please continue to park with thought and consideration for others when collecting your children. Also, unless you are waiting for siblings, please would you leave the school premises as soon as your child has been collected, to allow for other parents to enter the school grounds. Please may I also remind you that the school car park is for staff only. Please do not use this car park when dropping off or picking up pupils, unless you require the disabled parking space.  Please may I also ask parents to avoid parking in St Mary’s Church car park at drop off and pick up times.
