Mr Ken James, Headmaster Red House School

Dear Parents,

School Council
On Wednesday we held our first meeting of School Council since the AGM.  I would like to formally welcome Martin Anderson, Nicki Clark, Liz Elwell and Karen Shaw to School Council.  Their knowledge of the school and the skills they bring will no doubt help Red House continue to develop in the coming years.

A number of parents commented during the last survey that they do not know who the governors are or what they do within school.  In one way, governors at Red House are more high profile than those at other schools: each one is a parent and their children equate to almost 10% of the pupil population.  Should you be interested, a guide to their role can be found here (provided by the Association of Governors of Independent Schools) and the profiles of our governors can be found here.

PTA Quiz Night – Friday 1 February
Thank you to all those parents who’ve returned their reply slips.  The event is now full and we cannot accept any more bookings.  I’m sure it’s going to be a wonderful evening.

Junior School Restructure
After consultation with parents and colleagues, we have made the decision to bring the current Year 4 pupils across the pond for Year 5 in September.  The children in this year group will have been in the top classes for two years and we feel it is right for them to transition to the Senior School.  It does, however, remain our intention to create a Junior School catering for children from Nursery to Year 5 on one site.

Social Media
As many of you will know, we had an issue with inappropriate messages being posted on Instagram.  I would like to thank those parents who discussed this with their children and to those who made contact with me to offer their support.  I have emphasised the need for the children to ensure their digital profile is one of which they can be proud, to only communicate with people they know and, most importantly, to always choose kindness (whether online or otherwise). Social media is here to stay and I know you will join us to empower the children to make the right decisions and to stay safe.

Bugsy Malone: 3-6 July
Rehearsal are well under way for our next musical.  Please can parents of cast members ensure the children are available for rehearsals each Friday and for the other dates in Mrs Auty’s letter (attached).  Whilst one child being absent may seem a minor inconvenience, a different child absent each week can cause major headaches for the production team.  Tickets will be made available next term; I’m sure this will be another sell-out run.

Music Teacher in the Junior School
After many successful years at Red House, Mrs Tayler has finally decided to close the piano lid on her time here.  We will, of course, say goodbye properly in due course, but I thought I would alert you to the vacancy we now have for a part-time teacher of music for September; details are on our website.

I look forward to seeing many of the children in school tomorrow for our Open Morning.  Please note the change in timings: it’s running from 9am to 12 noon which should allow us all to start our weekend a little earlier.  Thank you in advance to those parents who are helping on the day and to those bringing the children into school.

With best wishes

Ken James
