15 April 2015

Dear Parent

Greenpower Goblin – electric car racing event. Washington. Tuesday 21st April 2015

Once again the school will be entering a Year 6 team in this event. This years competition takes place during normal school hours on Tuesday the 21st April. The team will consist of 6 drivers and each driver will race three times during the days activities. There will be a mandatory test session after school on Monday the 20th April from 4pm until 5.15pm to allow drivers to familiarise themselves with the car. If pupils are unable to attend this vital training session, then I am afraid they won’t be able to be part of the team.

The event will be split into 3 separate elements on the day, with each driver taking part in at least two events. The cars have been designed and built to have a top speed of about 15mph, and the competitive elements of the day have been formulated to reward skill and consistency, rather than outright speed.  Cars are checked for compliance with the event safety regulations, and the wearing of overalls, helmets, gloves and seat belts are mandatory. This safety and teamwear will be provided.  The following website may also be of interest – http://www.greenpower.co.uk/racing/goblins.

The event will take place at the Nissan test facility, run by Gateshead College, whose location is Washington Road, Sunderland, Tyne & Wear, SR5 3NS.  The group, led by Mr Wilkinson, will leave school after registration on the day of the event, travel to the venue using the school minibus, and then return to school in time for the usual 4pm pick-up.  There is no cost for attending this event.  Pupils will be required to wear their school games kit.  The trip will be subject to the conditions as set out in the Parent Contract, and will be covered by the school’s insurance policy.  A full risk assessment has been undertaken by the group leader.  A qualified first aider will be accompanying the trip and the venue will provide any necessary first aid once the event is underway. Items such as, personal stereos, iPods or cameras are not allowed.  The school cannot be held responsible for the care of these items if any pupil does bring them, and insurance will not cover them.

Pupils whose medical records indicate that they may require an inhaler or epi-pen to be administered, should carry their own devices while on this activity. Should a pupil not have a device available, they will not be allowed to be part of the team on this occasion.

We endeavour to take photographs on as many school trips and events as possible, and there will be photographs taken on the day. Please visit our website, Facebook and Twitter pages to view a selection of photographs from a range of events, including last years race meeting.

If you do consent to your child taking part in this event, please complete the tear-off strip below and return it to school as soon as possible. As places are extremely limited, and membership of the team is usually over-subscribed, please as your child to hand their consent slip to me personally so that a transparent first-come-first-served allocation can take place.

If you require any further information on this event, please do not hesitate to contact me at school.

Yours faithfully

Mr S Wilkinson
