Dear Parents

My first week at Red House has been everything I hoped for and more.  I have been overwhelmed by the welcome from the staff, children and parents and I look forward to talking to many more of you over the coming weeks.

I would also like to welcome our new members of staff. Mr Ian Maude has joined us as a teacher of Year 4, Mr Celia Gaunt is our new Head of French and Miss Rosie Farrell is teaching Year 2. I know they have had an equally warm welcome to the school.

I’ve taken assemblies on both sides of the road this week. It was delightful to hear the children singing their hearts out in both. Their passion and enthusiasm was heart-warming; long may this continue.  I’m a big advocate for the Arts and I’m keen to raise our profile here.  Hopefully, our musical, Oliver!, will help us to do so and will be a wonderful celebration of the talent we have in school.

Last Saturday I visited the pupils on the Art and Photography residential.  The pupils made the most of the wonderful scenery and quiet ambience, pressing ahead with their coursework.  Having fish and chips with them in Seahouses was a great way to end the day. I am grateful to the staff involved who gave up their weekend and, given the delightful company of the pupils, I’m sure they felt it was worth it.

Monday saw the official opening of the all-weather pitch.  It was wonderful to see a number of former pupils return to the school and I hope, in time, we can build greater links with our alumni community.  They serve as excellent role models to the children and are always willing to give a little back to the school which they hold so dear.  Particular thanks should go to John Harris, our former pupil who has played hockey for Scotland, who spent the afternoon coaching the children and encouraging the next generation of Red House stars.  Congratulations to the senior players who held the enthusiastic alumni to a draw on our new pitch too.

On Saturday I’ll be representing the school at the Stokesley Show.  Please do come along and say hello and let friends know that there will be a warm welcome at our stall.  Please can I also encourage you to spread the word about our Open Morning?  It’s on Saturday, 24th September from 10am until 1pm.  The format has changed a little this year and we are encouraging more pupils to be involved.  The children are our greatest ambassadors: the more pupils the visitors meet, the more they will be impressed.

At the beginning of term, the staff did an honest appraisal of Red House (a SWOT analysis for those in the know).  We are determined to move forward, retaining the best of what we do whilst refreshing areas where change is required.  I’m currently putting together a questionnaire for you to complete.  I have a number of areas of school life I would like to review but if you have any thoughts about aspects of the school that you think should be reviewed with parents, please do let me know.

One area I would like us to reconsider immediately is the way we communicate with parents.  Last Friday a huge amount of effort went into printing, sorting and distributing paperwork for the mail that went home on Friday.  I think it would be more efficient, more user friendly and better for the environment for communication to be electronic.  I’m working on the finer detail of how we can do this (possibly everything being on the website and then an email link each Friday) but would like to introduce this initiative as soon as possible.  Letters requiring a response will continue to be sent home by hand as well as being posted on the website.  Please let me know if this method of communication does not work for you.  Should there be a significant number of objections, I will, of course, find a work around. In the meantime, the electronic contact details we have for you are listed below.  If you could please take the time to check we hold the correct details for you it would be greatly appreciated. If the details are incorrect please e-mail linda.ward@redhouseschool.co.uk or update the slip below and return it to reception. It would also be beneficial if you could check your junk mail and add my e-mail address to your contacts to ensure you don’t miss any important communications.

Thank you once again for your support and warm welcome.  I’m loving being at Red House and excited about its future!

With best wishes

Ken James

Headmaster
