Dear Parent

As you may be aware, the new mathematics GCSE course is to be launched in September 2015, with the first examinations to be taken in June 2017.   There are many new and demanding topics involved and the current grading system is to be changed to reflect this.  The maths department are investing significantly in a wide range of new online resources, textbooks and homework books in order to support the pupils.

If you have older children that have attended Red House in the last few years, you may be aware that we have always fully endorsed a CD-rom, produced by Mathswatch, as an additional resource that children may purchase.  The CD-rom contains over 200 video clips to explain topics when pupils are unsure during their revision and to aid them with their homework.  The CD-rom also contains worksheets that pupils can print off to gain further practice when required.

The CD-rom covers all topics for both the foundation and higher tier, so regardless of the eventual level of entry at GCSE, it is relevant to all pupils in year nine to year eleven.  Mathswatch have now released an updated CD-rom which includes all the new topics  and is only available to purchase through schools.

It is my proposal that all pupils should have a copy of Mathswatch, in order to support their learning.  Unfortunately, Mathswatch is not compatible with Apple products such as Macs or ipads but is available to purchase through the itunes store.

The CD-rom costs £4.80 including VAT and can, of course, be passed to younger siblings that sit GCSE mathematics at a later date.  I intend to purchase sufficient CD-roms to cater for all pupils starting either Year 9 or Year 10 in September 2015, with this cost being added to their school bill.  Please could you return the reply slip below, if you do not wish for the disc to be provided for your child.  If you do not return the slip a charge of £4.80 will automatically be added to your bill.

Yours faithfully

Mr I Palmer
Head of Maths
