I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year. We have been back to school a week now and I thought you would like to know what your child will be studying this term.
English – Pupils will be reading The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. This fabulous book lends itself to many exciting creative writing opportunities. The pupils will also be writing their own science fiction story. We will link our English work with our rainforest project. Pupils will focus on producing persuasive writing such as posters, leaflets and advertisements.
Maths – Pupils will continue to consolidate their understanding of number and place value particularly in a problem solving situation. They will use formal written methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Pupils will recognise and draw angles and investigate lines of symmetry. Pupils will be taught to tell the time on a 24 hour clock. Finally they will find equivalent fractions and order and compare decimal numbers. Pupils can consolidate their learning at home by using the Active Learn website.
Science – Pupils will compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases. They will observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure the temperature at which this happens in degrees. Then pupils will identify that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot make their own food; they get nutrition from what they eat. Finally pupils will construct a food chain, identifying producers, predators and prey. This will also link with our rainforest project.
Art – Our art work will be linked with our rainforest project. Pupils will be creating rainforest images with pencils and pastels. Following this pupils will learn how to use printing techniques to create a large vibrant rainforest scene on cloth
French – Pupils will learn to give a simple description of a person; to talk about animals and describe their colour and movement; express likes and dislikes about food. They will also learn how to describe the life cycle of a plant in French, work on the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and say what they would like to buy in a market and order in a restaurant. They will add to their repertoire of verbs and continue to gain confidence in using simple language for classroom interaction; and to ask and answer questions about physical appearance.
Games-Boys – In the major team games such as football and rugby, the emphasis will be on improving basic skills and increasing the understanding of match play. In swimming, pupils will develop their technique in all 3 basic strokes and their individual performances will be recorded and monitored. There will also be some preparation work for the swimming gala which takes place this term. During single P.E. lessons, pupils will be involved in smaller units of work involving basketball and gymnastics.
Games-Girls – In the major team games such as netball and hockey, the emphasis will be on improving basic skills and increasing the understanding of match play. In swimming, pupils will develop their technique in all 3 basic strokes and their individual performances will be recorded and monitored. There will also be some preparation work for the swimming gala which takes place this term. During single P.E. lessons, pupils will be involved in smaller units of work involving basketball and gymnastics.
Geography – Pupils will be finding out about the rainforests considering the wide variety of plant and animal life that exist there. They will learn how the rainforests are under threat and how this has a dramatic effect on the existence of humans, plants and animals that live there and also the wider world.
History – Pupils will be continuing their study of Tudor life. They will be finding out how Tudor homes were constructed as well as making model houses. Pupils will complete their study of the Tudor period by focusing upon life at sea. They will find out about Henry VIII’s warship the Mary Rose and what everyday life was like for a sailor in Tudor times. They will also be considering why Tudor explorers were keen to sail to the New World and the dangers they encountered on their journeys.
ICT– Pupils will be learning how to find data from databases and will create their own databases from information that they have collected. Pupils will also be planning, producing and editing their own information page about the different animals that can be found in the layers of the rainforest.
Music – Pupils further develop their knowledge of musical notation and note values. Through listening topics and activities they learn about higher pitched instruments from each orchestral family. Basic skills on musical keyboards are reinforced and extended while classroom singing explores unison songs and some with simple harmonies.
PSHE – This term pupils will consider the importance of keeping themselves safe if they are alone, indoors and outdoors including internet safety. They will consider the importance of personal hygiene, a healthy diet and regular exercise.
RS – Pupils will be finding about the lives of the inspirational founders of the world’s main religions.
