Dear Parents

It is difficult to believe that our year 4 pupils are approaching their final term.  It is a credit to our young pupils as to how well they have adapted to life to in the main school.  The summer term is always a busy term and we have many exciting events planned.  I also thought that you would like to know what your child will be studying over the next term.  I hope that this information will be useful to you so that you can help support your child’s studies.

English – In the summer term we will be reading Bill’s New Frock by Anne Fine.  This humorous yet thought provoking book lends itself to many exciting creative writing opportunities and interesting discussions.  Pupils will work on developing their letter writing techniques.  The pupils will be rehearsing for the end of year drama production.  The pupils will also be preparing their entry for the school handwriting competition.

Maths – In maths the pupils will partition, round and order five and four-digit whole numbers.  They will develop and use written methods to record addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  Through the topic of data handling, pupils will draw bar charts.  Pupils will also explore decimals and fractions further.

Science – Next term the pupils will be studying the topic of electricity.  They will make simple circuits and use symbols to draw them.  They will also discover which materials are the best electrical conductors and use this information to make switches.  They will also be identifying different types of habitat and finding out that different animals are found in different habitats.  They will have the opportunity to observe the conditions in a local habitat and make a record of the animals found there when they visit Salthome on 26th June.  If you would like to accompany the pupils on this trip, your help is always very much appreciated.  If you would like to come with us could you please let me know via email or the school office.  Also Joanne Newbury from WWT will be visiting school on June 13th to deliver a workshop for our year 4 pupils to consolidate their understanding of habitats.

Art – Our art work will be linked with our history project, the Aztecs.  The pupils will paint their own Aztec design, create in clay their own Aztec sun stone and use mosaic techniques to make their own Aztec masks.

French – Next term, pupils will learn how to describe their house and bedroom. They will then be taught the words for different types of transport and the weather.

Games – During the summer term boys will be participating in athletics, tennis & cricket.  The girls will be participating in athletics, tennis and rounders.  The pupils will also have the swimming gala to look forward to which will take place on the afternoon of Friday 25th April.

Geography/ History –  This term we will be linking our geography and history studies.  In history the pupils will be studying the Aztec society finding out about daily life, religious beliefs and the Spanish conquest.  In geography we will compare Aztec life with life in modern day Mexico.

ICT – This term pupils will be creating a number of geometric pieces of art using the computer.  They will also be creating a short animated slide show.

Music -Year 4 will further practise composing melodies using the pentatonic scale and will listen to music from South America. They will learn more words and symbols that are used to notate music and indicate how it should be performed. Pupils will sing familiar and new songs and continue to play short tunes on keyboards to reinforce their understanding of notation.

PSHE – In our lessons this term pupils will be developing an understanding of society and the wider community.  Pupils will consider what it is to be a good citizen.  Pupils will be discussing the importance of rules and will consider what it is like to be disabled.

RS – In RS we will begin our studies about the Sikh faith.  We will be considering the importance and features of the Gurdwara, the story of the khalsa and the lives of the ten Gurus and why they are important to the Sikh community.

You may be aware that the pupils from years 7 to 9 have a week of exams beginning May 19th.  The children in year 4 will only be completing assessment tests in maths, reading and writing.  The tests take place in the class room during lesson term with the subject teacher.

The pupils in years 4 to 6 will all be starring in the first KS2 production.  In September we introduced drama lessons into the curriculum and to celebrate the children’s work this year they will be entertaining us with a collection of short plays based on fairy tales with a modern twist.  This event will take place on Thursday 3rd July and more details will be sent out nearer the time.

I do hope that you find this information useful so that you can support your child in their learning.  If you have any questions or queries please do get in touch tiffany.white@redhouseschool.co.uk.

Yours faithfully
