Dear Parents

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year. We have been back to school a week now and I thought you would like to know what your child will be studying this term.

English – Pupils will be reading The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe or Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis.  The books will provide the stimulus for creative and non fiction writing as well as drama activities.  Weekly exercises will be taught to improve the pupil’s spelling ability and to encourage the use of accurate punctuation. Pupils will also be reading, writing and performing poetry.

Maths – Pupils will further develop their use of mental strategies such as: doubling and halving, partitioning and using number bonds to solve problems. They will also consolidate and extend their use of written methods (+ – x ÷) to solve multi-step problems. They will explore number patterns and sequences involving square numbers and prime numbers and also convert between metric measures. Pupils will continue and extend their work of place value and multiply integers and decimals by 10, 100 and 1000. They will investigate 2D shape and learn about the properties of triangles and quadrilaterals.  Pupils can consolidate their learning at home by using the Active Learn website.

Science – Pupils will explore the topic of Earth in Space. They will discover why shadows change size with the apparent movement of the sun and also how night and day are created. Following this pupils will recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way their bodies function. Pupils will also explore the ways in which nutrients and water are transported within animals, including humans.

Art – Pupils will continue to develop their painting skills and will produce their own painting in the style of Claude Monet based on their own home

French Pupils will revise and extend language associated with healthy foods by learning to say whether foods are good or bad for your health ; learn to express and qualify opinions about musical preferences; describe their journey to school; to tell the time on the half-hour; and to give simple directions. They will apply their knowledge of adjectival agreements to new contexts and begin to learn about feminine plural agreements. They will also learn to use the partitive article; to form the perfect tense of the verbs manger and boire; to use the verb jouer + du, de la (with a musical instrument); to form the immediate future: aller + infinitive.

Games – Boys – Boys will cover a range of physical activities including football, hockey and swimming. In games, the programme is aimed to develop an increased level of understanding of basic tactics and rules, and how to apply these in a competitive environment.   In swimming, pupils will develop their technique in all 3 basic strokes and their individual performances will be recorded and monitored. Pupils will also be given the opportunity to take part in House competitions in all of these activities this term.

Games – Girls -Girls will cover a range of physical activities including hockey, netball and swimming. In games, the programme is aimed to develop an increased level of understanding of basic tactics and rules, and how to apply these in a competitive environment.  In addition to this, taster sessions will also be introduced in activities such as football and rugby.   In swimming, pupils will develop their technique in all 3 basic strokes and their individual performances will be recorded and monitored. Pupils will also be given the opportunity to take part in House competitions in all of these activities this term.

Geography – Pupils will be studying energy and resources.  They will learn about fossil fuels and the consequences of burning these, in particular looking at the greenhouse effect and global warming.  They will also learn about renewable and green energies.

History – Pupils will be studying the impact of trains on Britain and the legacy of the Victorian era.  Inventions and Empire will also be considered.  After half term, pupils will start to learn about Egypt with the first focus being on the Nile.

ICT– Pupils will be studying the units We are traders and We are advertisers.

Music – Pupils develop their awareness of notation and musical signs that indicate tempo, volume and expression. They learn about several orchestral instruments including the cello, clarinet and trombone. Alongside concert material, folk songs are the basis of classroom singing. Pupils continue regularly to play short melodies on musical keyboards.

PSHE – Pupils will learn about the harmful effects of smoking, drinking alcohol and taking drugs.

RS – The spring term will focus on Judaism.  We will study the beliefs and festivals of the faith and will consolidate our understanding with a trip to an orthodox synagogue.

Technology – The plan for this term is for Y5 to carry out two design and make activities.

1. Structures. Working in groups, Y5 pupils are to investigate a range of different bridge types, before designing one of their own. Pupils will need to design a bridge that can span a 500mm gap, and carry a significant load. The bridges will be tested to destruction at the end of the project.

2. Invitations. Individually, pupils will be designing an invitation to an event of their choice. They will design and create draft versions by hand, before generating a finished version using software such as Publisher.
