16 March 2015

Dear Parent

I am proposing to offer all Year 7 pupils the opportunity to participate in an outdoor activities weekend during the autumn term.

In recent years I have run a similar programme which has proved extremely popular and has been attended by almost everyone in the year.

I have provisionally booked Derwentwater Youth hostel near Keswick in the Lake District, for the nights of Friday 2nd October and Saturday 3rd October.  This would mean leaving school on the Friday morning and returning on Sunday afternoon (4th) at approximately 2.30pm.

The programme of activities is yet to be finalised, but it is likely to include some canoeing, rock climbing, ghyll scrambling and raft building.

This weekend is designed to promote qualities such as leadership and perseverance and recognise the value of team work. Whilst undoubtedly providing a physical challenge in stunning surroundings. I am sure the pupils will have a thoroughly enjoyable experience

The cost for the weekend will be £165, this covers the cost of transport, full board accommodation at the Youth Hostel and the provision of all activities by a recognised company based in Keswick.

This trip will be subject to the conditions of the annual consent form, and will be covered by the schools insurance policy. A full risk assessment has been undertaken by the group leader. A qualified first aider will be accompanying the trip. Personal items such as mobile phones, personal stereos, iPods or cameras are not allowed. The school cannot be held responsible for the care of these items and the school’s insurance will not cover them. One of the aims of the trip is to encourage a sense of independence. From past experience pupils who continually try to contact home are more likely to feel homesick. However, you can rest assured that if there is a problem we would contact you if we thought it necessary. We endeavour to take photographs on as many school trips as possible, please visit our website, facebook and twitter pages to view a selection of photographs.

If you would like your son/daughter to participate please complete the slip below and return it with a payment of £65 made payable to Red House School by 20th March.  The second payment of £100 will be due after the Easter break.

Please note that money may not be refunded if at a later date if your son/daughter is unable to attend and the School is unable to fully recover the amount paid to the trip organiser.

Yours faithfully
