In Years 1 & 2 we provide a secure and vibrant environment in which children develop good social skills and independence. We offer a wide and varied curriculum, resulting in confident and enthusiastic children who are happy to be at school. We ensure that all children are well known and looked after; a great strength of the school.

In Key Stage One a typical morning will consist of the core subjects; English and Mathematics.

In Literacy, we place great emphasis on ‘reading for meaning’, from understanding letters, to understanding words, through to understanding text. We value the importance of guided reading, enabling the children to fully comprehend the text they read. The Literacy timetable also places great emphasis on grammar, spelling and writing in different genres.

In Numeracy the children are encouraged to develop their mental skills through oral activities, as well as practical activities. Children sometimes learn best when discovering things for themselves!

The afternoons mainly consist of topic work, which incorporates science, history, geography, art and design. Exciting topics covered across the Key Stage range from ‘Clothes and Coverings’ to ‘Global Gardens’ Other subjects; ICT, R.S. and French, are taught separately by the class teacher. For P.E and Music, the children are taught by specialist teachers. A variety of educational visits are organised throughout the year and are linked to topics being studied each term.

Homework tasks reinforce the children’s understanding of the literacy and numeracy concepts covered during the week. There are also weekly spellings to practise and learn at home. Children take home a reading book daily and have the opportunity to visit the school library to borrow books each week.

At play time, the children may bring a healthy snack to eat. Milk is available for the children to drink and they may also bring a small bottle of water. They have access to a range of playground equipment, as well the trim trail and two grass fields.

By the end of Year 2, the children are independent, confident, well mannered and fully prepared for the next exciting stage of their education.
