Curriculum

Our structured day, along with a well-planned programme of stimulating activities, ensures the children achieve and exceed their Early Learning Goals.

There are three prime areas of learning and development:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language

There are also four specific areas of learning through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

At Red House we encourage effective learning through playing and exploring, creative and critical thinking, and active learning.

We ensure a balance is maintained between teacher-led activities and those which are child-initiated. We understand the importance of allowing children the time to choose, explore and discover, so they grow in independence and develop personal skills.

“The quality of pupils’ academic and other achievements is excellent.”

Nursery

Our Nursery is led by a highly qualified Early Years teacher, supported by experienced and qualified (Level 3 and above) Nursery Assistants. On entry, children are assigned a Key Person who maintains close contact with the child’s family.  Physical Education and Music lessons are taught by specialist teachers.

Our class sizes are intentionally small. We are proud of our child-centred approach, offering crucial one-to-one attention whilst tailoring the curriculum to nurture and stretch curious young minds.

With access to its own beautiful enclosed garden, our Nursery provides a spacious, friendly and calm environment in which children can play and learn.

‘Academic play’ is at the very heart of our Nursery. Children are encouraged in their learning with fun and interactive, play-based activities, whilst being given age appropriate academic challenges.

By the end of their time in Nursery, children will have already begun developing their pre-reading and writing skills. Our personalised approach ensures the children achieve their milestones and continue their personal progression into Reception with ease. The transition to a classroom setting in Reception is also made easier due to their familiarity with their environment, teachers and friends at Red House.

Reception

In Reception, children gain confidence in their individual abilities, developing social skills with their friends and enjoying the process of learning.

As the year progresses, children are supported to work on focused tasks for greater periods of time. They are encouraged to explore and choose resources they wish to use. By developing their curiosity, we are laying the foundations for them to become confident, independent learners.

Led by a highly qualified and experienced teacher and Teaching Assistants, children thrive because of the individual attention they receive. Physical Education and Music lessons are continue to be taught by specialist teachers.

Through small class sizes, teachers ensure the children’s academic, creative and physical development are reached, and their individual personalities flourish.

By the end of their time in Reception, the children are ready and excited to be entering the next phase of their school life in Year 1.
