Alumni Spotlight: Robert Goundry – From Red House School to Oxford and a Distinguished Railway Career

We are delighted to shine the spotlight on one of our former pupils, Robert Goundry, who attended Red House School from 1952 to 1958. Robert recently got in touch to share his journey since leaving school, reflecting on how his early education helped shape a lifetime of learning, leadership and professional success.

Life After Red House School

Robert’s academic journey continued with great distinction after leaving Red House School. He was awarded a scholarship to Sedbergh School, before going on to study at Lincoln College, Oxford — a remarkable achievement that reflects both his ability and the strong foundations laid during his early years.

A Career with Purpose and Leadership

Following university, Robert spent a year teaching overseas with Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) in Libya, an experience that broadened his outlook and sense of purpose.

He then embarked on a highly successful career in the railway industry, holding senior leadership roles during a transformative period for UK rail. Robert became Managing Director of North West Regional Railways in the lead-up to privatisation and later served as Director of Strategy for the Freightliner Group, playing a key role in shaping the future of rail freight in the UK.

Retirement, Family Life and Reflection

Since retiring in 2005, Robert has enjoyed spending time with his family, including his three grandchildren, and now lives in Leamington Spa.

Reflecting on his time at Red House School, Robert shared:

“I think Red House began my love of history, along with the realisation that the methods it uses are as applicable to business problems as to academic issues.”

His words highlight the enduring value of a Red House education — preparing pupils not just for exams, but for life beyond the classroom.
