Alumni Spotlight: Phil Adèle – Believing in Yourself and Embracing the Journey

Red House School alumnus Phil Adèle has built a successful career in the performing arts, but his journey has been shaped as much by resilience and self-belief as it has by talent. Looking back on his experiences since leaving school, Phil shares the lessons that have helped him navigate challenges, embrace opportunities and achieve his goals.

One of the most important pieces of advice Phil wishes he had known as a pupil is to focus on doing your best rather than comparing yourself to others.

He believes it is easy to become distracted by what those around you are achieving, but true progress comes from recognising your own efforts and taking pride in knowing you have given something your full attention and commitment.

“If you know wholeheartedly that you did your best and gave something your full attention, focus and produced the best work you could in that moment, you deserve to be proud of yourself regardless of the result.”

A defining moment in Phil’s journey came while he was training at drama school. A tutor told him that he would never sing on a West End stage because he did not have the voice they believed he needed.

Although the comment was difficult to hear at the time, Phil made a decision not to let it define him. Instead, he used it as motivation to work harder and prove that it was possible.

Ten years later, he had done exactly that, performing on West End stages in multiple productions.

Looking back, Phil believes that setbacks often provide some of life’s greatest learning opportunities. Rather than viewing mistakes or disappointments as failures, he encourages pupils to see them as opportunities to learn, grow and improve.

Another lesson that has guided Phil throughout his life is the importance of embracing new experiences. By continuing to say “yes” to opportunities that excited or challenged him, he has developed confidence, resilience and a clearer understanding of what matters most to him.

His message to current pupils is simple but powerful:

“Go be the best YOU that you can be.”

Phil believes that everyone has their own unique strengths, talents and qualities. By focusing on your own journey, embracing new experiences and believing in yourself, you can achieve far more than you might imagine.
