Red House School proudly celebrates alumnus Professor Peter Tymms, Emeritus Professor of Education at Durham University. His career has advanced education research worldwide, influencing how schools support children’s learning from the earliest stages.

Red House Alumni Making a Global Impact
Professor Peter Tymms, a proud Red House School alumnus, has dedicated his life to understanding how children learn and how schools can best support pupil progress. His research and initiatives have had a significant impact not only in the UK but internationally, showcasing the far-reaching influence of Red House alumni in education.
A Remarkable Career in Education
After studying Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, Peter taught in schools ranging from Central Africa to the North East of England. He then embarked on an academic career at Durham University, where he led the development of the PIPS assessment system—a monitoring project now used globally with millions of children to track early learning and development.
Even after retirement, Professor Tymms continues to contribute to educational projects, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to improving learning outcomes and advancing education research worldwide.
Honoured for Excellence in Educational Research
In recognition of his outstanding work, Peter was elected a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA), one of the highest honours for social science academics in the UK. This accolade highlights his influence and the global relevance of his research in child development and education.
