SeniorYear 9 Pupils Explore Sustainability Through Planet Algae Workshop with Newcastle University
Year 9 pupils at Red House School recently took part in an inspiring STEM workshop, Planet Algae, led by Daniel Leask, Outreach Ambassador from Newcastle University. The engaging session introduced pupils to the fascinating world of algae and seaweed, highlighting their growing importance in sustainability, science, and innovation.

Year 9 STEM Workshop Brings Science to Life
At Red House School, we are passionate about creating opportunities for pupils to experience learning beyond the classroom. Our recent Planet Algae workshop gave Year 9 pupils the chance to explore cutting-edge scientific research and real-world environmental challenges.
Led by Daniel Leask from Newcastle University, the session focused on the remarkable role algae and seaweed play in supporting ecosystems and protecting our planet.
The Importance of Algae in Sustainability
Pupils discovered how algae and seaweed contribute to healthier ecosystems by producing oxygen, absorbing carbon dioxide, and supporting marine biodiversity.
They also explored how algae is being used in a wide range of industries, including:
- Pharmaceuticals – helping develop medicines and medical treatments
- Beauty and skincare – providing natural ingredients for cosmetic products
- Food production – offering sustainable and nutritious food alternatives
Learning about these applications helped pupils understand how science can drive solutions to some of the world’s biggest challenges, including climate change and sustainable resource management.
Creative Problem-Solving Through Innovation
The workshop encouraged pupils to combine scientific knowledge with creativity. Working collaboratively, they designed innovative algae-based products aimed at solving global issues.
This hands-on activity challenged pupils to think critically, develop problem-solving skills, and consider how future scientific innovation could improve lives around the world.
Their ideas demonstrated impressive creativity and highlighted the exciting potential of sustainable technology.
Inspiring Future STEM Careers
In addition to the scientific learning, Daniel shared valuable insights into STEM careers, university pathways, and student life at Newcastle University.
Pupils gained a clearer understanding of the opportunities available in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, helping them think about future study options and career aspirations.
Experiences like these play an important role in broadening horizons and inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.
Thank You to Newcastle University
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Daniel Leask and Newcastle University for delivering such an engaging and thought-provoking workshop.
The Planet Algae session was a fantastic opportunity for our Year 9 pupils to explore sustainability, innovation, and future career possibilities through hands-on STEM learning.
