Alumni Spotlight: Russell Earnshaw – From Red House School to International Rugby and Coaching

At Red House School, we are always proud to celebrate the achievements of our alumni. This month, we shine the spotlight on Russell Earnshaw (Class of 1991), whose journey from Red House to Cambridge University, England Rugby, and global coaching has been nothing short of inspiring. Over 35 years after leaving Red House, Russell reflects on how his teachers and early school experiences shaped his career and life.

Inspired Beginnings at Red House School

Russell Earnshaw’s time at Red House School in the late 1980s and early 1990s left a lasting impact. Inspired by Headmaster Mr England, who encouraged him to join Stockton Rugby Club, and teachers Mr Frank and Mr Makin, who sparked his passion for science, Russell discovered the foundations of both his sporting and academic journey.

“I left Red House in 1991 inspired by the Headmaster Mr England who ‘forced’ me to join Stockton Rugby Club, Mr Frank (throwing sodium in water was what I wanted to see in chemistry) and Mr Makin (who may or may not have bent the rules with mercury in the physics classroom). All three changed the trajectory of my life,” Russell shared.

From Cambridge to England Rugby

That inspiration led Russell to Cambridge University, where he combined academic study with elite-level rugby. His playing career took him to Bath Rugby, England 7s, and Rotherham before he transitioned into coaching. Over the years, he has coached England 7s, Doncaster, Birmingham Solihull, England U18s (boys and girls), and England U20s, alongside roles with teams and organisations across the sporting world.

Building The Magic Academy

For the last seven years, Russell has run his own venture, The Magic Academy, helping leaders and coaches think differently, grow, and achieve their goals. His work has taken him across the globe, from Iceland to New Zealand, working with international sporting organisations including the Premier League, GB Hockey, England Rugby, and even Google.

A Philosophy for Life

Russell describes his work-life philosophy simply:

  1. Will it be an adventure?
  2. Will I learn?
  3. Can I take my family?

Operating on a minimum of two out of three, but ideally all three, Russell balances international travel with time at home, always supported by his wife Amy, whom he describes as “the most important person in all of this.”

Reflecting on Red House School

Looking back, Russell adds:
“The seeds planted at Red House have grown into a rather large tree… I’ve become obsessed with helping people help themselves, obsessed with how to develop expertise and humans being amazing.”

We are incredibly proud of Russell and the inspiring path he has taken since his Red House days.
